The John Knox Symposium 2019 is a special event presented by the School of Chemistry in celebration of Prof John H. Knox who sadly passed away in 2018 at the age of 90.
Prof. Knox was a remarkable man who obtained a BSc (1st class hons) in Chemistry from Edinburgh University in 1949 and a PhD from Cambridge University. He returned to a Lectureship at Edinburgh University in 1953 and remained with us until his retirement. Many will remember him as an approachable, kind and supportive teacher. What we may not have realised is that he is also regarded as the most distinguished Physical Chemist of his generation in Scotland. He was a world authority in the field of separation science and a pioneer in the development of modern high performance chromatography. After his retirement, inspired by his love of sailing and a few ‘adventures’, he developed the AnchorWatch device and designed the ‘Knox anchor’ that is now commercially manufactured.
This is a day of talks spanning John’s life and scientific legacy with contributions from family, friends and colleagues and former students as well as current researchers at the forefront of developments in separation science. It is sure to be a fascinating day of reminiscing and learning more about a great man and his scientific legacy. One of the confirmed Speakers is Prof. G John Langley from The University of Southampton Chair of the Separation Science Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry, who will talk about the Knox Medal, awarded to honour individuals for their innovation or influential work in the field of separation science. There will also be the opportunity to have a tour of the chemistry building and learn about the wide range of research taking place in the School today.
A Symposium Dinner for members of the Knox family, friends and alumni will be held on the same evening at The Prestonfield Suite in the John McIntyre Conference Centre.
