Dr Amanda Jarvis Edinburgh Science Festival Exhibition Highlights Art and Science Intersection

Exhibition (26th June – 11th July 2021) & Discussion (28th June 2021)

Christina Miller Fellow & UKRI Future Leaders Fellow Dr Amanda Jarvis is taking part in this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival alongside artist Honza Turnovsky in an exhibition exploring the intersection between art and science titled “Catalysing Creativity”.

Born out of the ASCUS & ScotChem Catalysing Chemistry project, the Catalysing Creativity exhibition showcases art works under the title “Sciennes Place”, examining the shared theme of “activation” in science and art. Jarvis’ scientific research concerns the activation of naturally inactive proteins via the introduction of metal complexes and it is this theme of “activation” that sparked conversation with Turnovsky regarding the role of art in reactivating memories of events forgotten by time. Speaking about creating “Sciennes Place”, a collection of ceramics, prints, and cyanotypes, Jarvis notes:

 Dr Amanda Jarvis

“I worked with the artist Honza Turnovsky to share my research. We ended up having a range of interesting discussions around the idea of activating objects, bringing things to life, whether that is an inactive protein or a forgotten place. I also used the opportunity to learn to etch – something that I have always wanted to do but never quite got round to, in a way reactivating my artistic side!”

These artworks will be presented at the free, online Catalysing Creativity Exhibition at the Edinburgh Science Festival from the 26th June until 11th July 2021 at the following link: https://www.sciencefestival.co.uk/event-details/catalysing-creativity-exhibition

A free, online tie-in discussion event on the role of creativity in science will take place on 28th June 2021. Dr Amanda Jarvis and Honza Turnovsky will discuss how the theme of “activation” presents itself within their respective disciplines, connecting what are often considered as disparate areas.

“Historically, I think people often felt they had to choose between the Arts and Sciences, I hope this exhibition and discussion shows that it doesn’t have to be the case and that art and chemistry have many similarities, with creativity being an essential part of both disciplines.” – Dr Amanda Jarvis
