Spectroscopy in a Suitcase Goes Out and About

Outreach students visit Dundee
The spectroscopy in a suitcase instruments at Baldragon High School

Emily Goddard, Daniel Cutler and Katie Grant went to Baldragon High School in Dundee last Wednesday to run two workshops with the Higher chemistry pupils.

The workshop consisted of a murder mystery where the students worked out how Mr Blue, a fictional character, had died by utilising IR and UV-Vis analysis. It was a great success and we got a mention in the local newspaper who picked up on it through the school’s twitter page. There was also the chance for their Advanced Higher pupil to analyse the aspirin he had synthesised using the IR spectrometer which, when compared against Bruker’s catalogue, matched >95%!
