Sir William Darling Memorial Prize

Sarah Thomas has been awarded this year's Sir William Darling Memorial Prize.

This is awarded to a student at the University of Edinburgh who by example, scholarship or pre-eminence in sport has done most to advance or enhance the reputation of the University.

The prize was awarded for Sarah's work in engaging the local community with real research taking place in the School of Chemistry.

The prize will be awarded at the Freshers Welcoming ceremony on 12th September at the McEwan Hall.

Doors Open Day

The varied set of events run from 10am to 4pm. Saturday will be your first chance to enjoy our Chemistry Trail - a walk around the centre of Edinburgh highlighting some of the exciting chemistry discoveries which took place here. So pick up a map and enjoy discovering the chemistry sights in Edinburgh!

S6 School Pupils Access Our Teaching Laboratories

Every year in the last two weeks of June the undergraduate teaching laboratory at the School of Chemistry open their doors and welcome in S6 school pupils to help them carry out their Advanced Higher Prescribed Practical Activity (PPAs).

This year we had over 130 students from schools in the Lothians and Fife. We were so busy that we ran an additional week in August just before our undergraduate students returned. Here are some photos from Beath High School showing their pupils in action in our undergraduate teaching laboratories.

Our Changing World

As part of this series of public lectures that examine the global challenges facing society and the role of academia in meeting these challenges, Dr Michael Shaver, Chancellor's Fellow in the School of Chemistry, presented "The Intertwined World of 'Peak' Oil, Renewables and Sustainability".
