Joseph Black Conference 2015

The inaugural Joseph Black Conference: Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh was held on Wednesday 27th May at the Appleton Tower. Attended by over 230 delegates, the event allowed all 2nd and 3rd year members of the Graduate School the opportunity to present their work to their peers, academic staff and industrial partners.

It was also a great way to share ideas, and to come together as a graduate school to celebrate the breadth and quality of research carried out in the school.

Over 120 chemists at different stages in their careers and from all over the UK and Germany attended the Anglo-German International Conference on Inorganic Chemistry (AGICHEM) meeting held from the 30th July to 1st August 2014. Lewis Fenton, 1st year PhD Student at the School of Chemistry, gives his account of the event.

I'm a Scientist Get Me Out of Here

Dr Martin Ward recently took part in the "I'm a Scientist Get Me Out of Here" program. He tells us about the experience below:

???I???m a scientist, get me out of here??? is a free online event where school students get to meet and interact with scientists.  Groups of 5 scientists are asked to join in live web text chat sessions where primary school kids are on the other side of the keyboard and they can ask us anything that comes in to their head!

ChemSoc Burns Supper 2015

The Annual Chemsoc Burns supper was held this year in the ballroom at The Roxburghe Hotel. Staff and students alike donned their formal kilts to celebrate the life and poems of Robert Burns. The evening started with the piping into the room of the ceremonial haggis to which Lewis Fenton gave a spirited reading of the classic poem "To a Haggis".
