Chemistry at Universitas 21 Events

Universitas 21 Summer School is an organisation that brings together outstanding undergraduate students under the age of 21 from around the world to discuss topics centred around real-world issues. This year the themes were "Shaping the Future City" and "Food Safety: From Farm to Table".

From the School of Chemistry, Douglas Cullen attended the meeting in New South Wales about Shaping the Future City and Katarzyna Sokol was at a conference in Shanghai about food safety.

Graduation 2014

We held our summer graduation ceremony on Saturday the 28th of June. Students, family and staff were all in attendance to witness the culmination of years of hard work.

Bonds Across Generations

This month we are delighted to be welcoming our new intake of fresh faced students to the Joseph Black Building!

For generations, students in the School have known each other???s support both in the laboratory and social environment.  We are incredibly proud that our School is characterised by this strong cross-generational community and this year wondered if we could find a way to welcome and connect our new students with previous generations.

School of Chemistry 4th in Times University Ranking

The School of Chemistry at Edinburgh University has been ranked the 4th best chemistry department in the UK according to the Times and Sunday Times University Ranking Guide 2015.

The Guide ranks subjects using a variety of criteria including teaching quality, student-staff ratio and student experience.

Success for the University of Edinburgh 2015 iGEM Team

The undergraduate University iGEM team has just returned from the iGEM Giant Jamboree in Boston where they won a gold medal for their participation in this highly prestigious competition. They also brought home the award for best ???Integrated Policy and Practices??? at undergraduate level and were nominated for best undergraduate team in the ???Health and Medicine??? track of the competition.

This is a fantastic achievement from a field of over 250 teams from across the world.

New Student Exchange Agreement Signed

The School of Chemistry recently signed a new student exchange agreement with Tianjin University, Tianjin, China to enable some of our students to attend the Tianjin summer school, starting from summer 2016.

The agreement was signed by our Principal during the celebrations of the 120th anniversary of Tianjin University, the oldest modern University in China.

Innovative Learning Week Award for iGEM Event

The Edinburgh iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) sandpit event was nominated for 3 Innovative Learning Week Awards and won the  ILW ???The Ideas in Play Award???.

The week-long event is run to introduce students for across the university to the iGEM competition. Students are encouraged to explore and develop project ideas for our entry for iGEM 2016 and be inspired to join the team and work on the project over the summer.
