International Year of Light and the School of Chemistry

International Year of Light 2015 logo

The United Nations proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL2015). During the Year we highlighted the importance of light and optical technologies in our lives, for our futures and for the development of our society.

You can see how we celebrated IYL2015 on these pages. Highlights included a light-themed ceilidh in December and lots of light-based activities at science festivals throughout the year.

International Year of Light 2015 Research Profiles

Every month during 2015 we asked a PhD student who makes use of light to tell us a bit about their research and themselves. Click on the pictures below to read about their PhD experiences and learn more about how light is used in many different projects.
