Research Overview

BSc 1959,PhD 1962, Hon DSc 2009

PhD with Derek Leaver, then followed a DSIR Fellowship with Fritz Kroehnke at the Justus Liebig Universitaet, Giessen. Appointed Lecturer at Trinity College, Dublin in 1964.  Resigned 1966 and joined the then Petrochemical and Polymer Lab of ICI at Runcorn working in a group concerned with conduction in Organic Polymers. Was made a Safety Officer there 1968-70. Appointed to Grangemouth Works ICI in 1970 as a Group Leader in Process Development, Section Manager Process Technology 1973, Manager 1979. Remained Manager until retirement in 1998 having responsibility for Ardeer Works Process Technology from 1983-5 and again from 1993-7. Part time Lecturer Edinburgh University 1995-2005, having a role in safety here too. Aided Salters Prize candidates 1996-2015. While Manager at ICI (latterly Zeneca) assisted in the disposal of Uni Dept waste and carried on with this after joining the Chemistry School.
