Life at the University of Edinburgh

University is not just about academic learning. You will have the opportunity to expand your horizons in any number of exciting ways. The University of Edinburgh has a vibrant and varied social scene. Living in student halls is a great way to meet students from all over the world studying different subjects.

Within Chemistry there is ChemSoc, the world's oldest student chemistry society which provides many benefits for its members, including regular social events.

Sports and Societies

Whatever non-academic activities you prefer, there's something for you at Edinburgh. The University itself has five student unions, including Teviot House, the oldest purpose-built student union in the world.

We also have over 200 student societies covering every imaginable area of interest. The Pleasance is close to George Square and houses many of our societies and is also a venue during the Festival, hosting comedy and theatre. The Pleasance is also home to our sports centre and we have a first-class site for sports near our King's Buildings campus.

Close to the Action

Edinburgh is a compact city so you're never far from anywhere. Most students live in the centre of Edinburgh, which puts them right on the doorstep of the city's attractions. There are plenty of places to wind down, from theatres to museums and galleries.

Edinburgh also has an excellent public transport system with regular buses to and from the city centre and our campuses. Waverley train station is right in the heart of the city, letting you walk off the train and straight onto Princes Street.
