Lectures, workshops and tutorials form the basis of your education at Edinburgh.
Chemistry is a practical subject and you will spend a large amount of time in the laboratory. Over the course of 12 weeks you will work in the research lab of one of our academics, working on problems at the very forefront of chemistry research.
The labs allow you to put the theory you'll learn in lectures and tutorials to the test. They will build confidence in a laboratory environment and also introduce you to the various techniques and instruments you will use in your chemistry career.
All our courses are supported by e-learning which allows students access to vital teaching information any time they need it. This also helps provide excellent feedback and allows our students to prepare for classes more effectively.
Tutorials reinforce the knowledge gained from lectures and allow you to work on any problem areas. The small group sizes make these sessions ideal for discussion and problem-solving and to build confidence in your chemistry knowledge.
"I've already got contacts in industry because I'm sponsored by Astra Zeneca and that was all arranged by the University.
In labs there's lots of group work and that's helpful too. We're lucky to have state of the art facilities here and there's always someone around to help you out if you're stuck"

A member of academic staff called a Director of Studies (DoS) will guide and mentor you during your time at Edinburgh. You keep the same DoS throughout your study and they will be your first port of call to discuss anything at all related to your course, personal or financial matters.
The DoS can advise you on everything from helping you to organise your studies more effectively to improving your CV and what skills employers look for. Our students find their experience and advice invaluable.
In addition to your DoS, each year elects a representative to sit on the Staff Student Liaison Committee. This representative provides a direct link from the students to the course organisers and is a vital part of our feedback process, which works both ways in the School.
