A member of academic staff called a Director of Studies (DoS) will guide and mentor you during your time at Edinburgh. You keep the same DoS throughout your years of study and they will be your first port of call to discuss anything at all related to your course, they are also available to help you solve personal or financial issues. Your DoS will provide a point of access to the wide range of support services provided by the university.

The DoS can advise you on everything from what optional courses are right for you to helping you to organise your studies more effectively to improving your CV and what skills employers look for. Our students find their experience and advice invaluable.
In addition to your DoS, each year class elects a representative to sit on the Staff-Student Liaison Committee. This representative provides a direct link from the students to the course organisers and is a vital part of our feedback process, which works both ways in the School.
Tutorials in year 1 are given by your Director of Studies and one other member of staff in groups of up to 6 students. They reinforce the knowledge gained from lectures and allow you to work on any problem areas. The small group sizes make these sessions ideal for discussion and problem-solving and to build confidence in your chemistry knowledge. This regular weekly contact with your DoS throughout your first year enables a relationship to be built which provides a valuable means of student support throughout your degree studies in the School of Chemistry.
