"I love Chemistry and wouldn't choose to be anywhere else in the world. I wanted to go to a university that had a recognised name associated with it. I like the fact you get a city and a country all in one. I've lived in cities such as London and New York and you don't get this mix anywhere else."
Michael Forde, MChem student from Trinidad and Tobago
The School of Chemistry in Edinburgh is large and diverse with many international links through both its research and teaching activities. We have a large number of students from all corners of the globe. Our Director of Studies system provides all our students with the support they need and is particularly helpful for our international students to help them adjust to life in a new country. With such a large student community you'll never feel alone at Edinburgh, especially if you live in the student halls in your first year.
We have students from as far afield as USA, Canada, Singapore, India, South Africa, China and the Caribbean as well as from many European countries. Each year a substantial number of chemistry students choose Edinburgh as the host for their Study Abroad period, either for one semester or for a full year. Studying at Edinburgh really is a great way to meet people from all over the world and if you are an international student you certainly won't be the only one on your course.
Undertaking your Chemistry degree in Edinburgh also means that you will have the option of spending a year away from Edinburgh during the penultimate year of your MChem degree. A very wide variety of options exist. Many students undertake a year in industry in the UK, elsewhere in Europe or in the USA with companies such as GSK, Dupont, Unilever and Procter & Gamble, or at internationally renowned research institutes such as The Rutherford-Appleton, Argonne or Los Alamos laboratories. Other students take part in a 12-month exchange with one of our prestigious partner universities in Europe or Asia (Singapore, S. Korea, Hong Kong, Russia). Each of these possibilities is open to all MChem students and involves an assessed period of research work which contributes 20% to the final degree assessment.
