Chemical Physics Degrees
Chemical Physics students study Chemistry, Physics and Maths and spend time in the Schools of Chemistry and Physics throughout their degree. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree means you will benefit from a wide range of expertise and experience.
Typical Progression
Years 1 and 2
Chemistry Physics and Maths are required courses. This provides a solid grounding in the fundamentals that will prove vital as you progress through your degree. You will spend time in the Schools of Chemistry and Physics studying subjects such as Inorganic Chemistry and Foundation of Physics.
Year 3
The course becomes more specialised with material continuing to be drawn from both the Chemistry and Physics degree programmes. There is also a strong emphasis on the development of transferable skills such as problem solving, oral and written communications and use of scientific literature.
Year 4
Some students spend this year abroad or working in industry. For those studying at Edinburgh areas of study include Quantum Physics and Properties and Reactions of Matter, among many others. Study is still done in both Chemistry and Physics, benefitting from the wide range of expertise in both Schools. Students studying for a BSc undertake a research project within one of our research groups. MChem students undertake 2 team-based research projects.
Year 5
The final year for MChem students. Those who spent a year abroad or in industry return for their final year of study. Study of subjects continues as in 4th year and students also complete a research project within one of our research groups.
Year Abroad or in Industry
Some students may choose to spend the 4th year of their MChem degree studying outside the School of Chemistry. They can spend a year studying abroad or in industry. This extra experience can prove invaluable once you gradaute and spending a year in industry is a great way to supplement your income while learning vital chemistry skills!
