Four awards are given and are designed to assist new faculty members in gaining visibility within the computational chemistry community and provide support to attend the ACS Fall Meeeting.
The award was given for Julien's presentation entitled "Quantifying biomolecular hydration thermodynamics".
The Fall Meeting takes place in Indianapolis in September.
We are delighted to announce that the winner of the first ever Fraser and Norma Stoddart PhD Prize is Dr Olof Johansson.
This is the first year the prize has been presented. It is awarded to a PhD graduate who has shown not only excellence in research but contributed to the life of students within the School.
Olof will be presented with the prize by Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart on 27 June, on the occasion of Sir Fraser's public lecture at the Tercentenary Celebration.
Congratulations to David and Stella Rankin, who have been awarded a gold medal for their exhibit in the Great Pavilion at the Chelsea Flower Show.
David And Stella's garden featured rare mountain plants and also reveived a "Best in Show" from the Financial Times.
Sarah Thomas has been awarded this year's Sir William Darling Memorial Prize.
This is awarded to a student at the University of Edinburgh who by example, scholarship or pre-eminence in sport has done most to advance or enhance the reputation of the University.
The prize was awarded for Sarah's work in engaging the local community with real research taking place in the School of Chemistry.
The prize will be awarded at the Freshers Welcoming ceremony on 12th September at the McEwan Hall.
Nicholle Bell (University of Edinburgh) and Matthew Renshaw (Cambridge University) have been jointly awarded best presentation prize at this year's Royal Society of Chemistry NMR Discussion Group postgraduate meeting held in the School of Chemistry on June 20.
They will now each present their work at the December 2013 NMR DG meeting in London.
Research by Dr Andy Alexander has been selected among the 80 most influential papers in the history of the Journal of Chemical Physics. The journal is celebrating its 80th year and selected a list of its most outstanding papers to commemorate the anniversary.
Professor Euan Brechin has been awarded a 2015/6 Velux Visiting Professorship at The University of Copenhagen by the Villum Foundation.
The object of this programme is to strengthen research and education in Denmark by supplementing Danish research environments with international experience and knowledge, and promoting the development of international research networks and teaching programmes.
The award is presented each year to an outstanding young inorganic research chemist based in the UK.
Ross, an Edinburgh graduate and currently a postdoctoral fellow in Professor Euan Brechin's group, received the award "for the development of the coordination chemistry of phenolic oximes and their roles in the chemistry and physics of molecular magnets".
Professor Polly Arnold was awarded the prize for outstanding contributions to the application of organometallic uranium chemistry to small molecule activation.
Well done to Nina Chadwick for winning the (only) poster prize at the conference "Transforming Materials Chemistry" at St Andrews earlier this week. The conference had a stellar list of speakers and it was great for an Edinburgh contribution to be highlighted in front of the international assembly.
