Graduate's work during year abroad contributed to the final paper

Congratulations to MChem Medicinal and Biological Chemistry alumnus, Marek Varga, for being published in Science.

Marek contributed to the recently published paper, “Small-molecule activation of OGG1 increases oxidative DNA damage repair by gaining a new function”. His collaborators included researchers from our partner institution Karolinska Institutet, where Marek completed his final year overseas placement in July 2021 as part of the Helleday Laboratory.

Marek was the third School of Chemistry student to go to Karolinska Institutet. The first student to spend their MChem placement year there was Pepy Iliev, who was recently published in Nature Cancer.

Well done to Marek and thanks to Karolinska Institutet for their support of our undergraduate student placements.

Marek Varga

I am very grateful for the year I spent at Karolinska Institute. I grew immensely as both a person and a scientist and I highly recommend the experience to the future generations of chemists at Edinburgh!

Despite a global pandemic and even through lockdown, we are immensely proud that our powerhouse partnership with the Helleday Laboratory at the Karolinska Institutet continues to go from strength to strength. This has enabled our students to gain incredible hands-on experience which has helped them progress in their careers.
