Chemistry Graduates Reconnect at Summer Alumni Gathering

Earlier this month, School of Chemistry alumni from across six decades came together to network, reminisce and find out about recent changes at the Joseph Black Building

We welcomed former students back to the School of Chemistry on Saturday 18th June 2022 for our first in-person alumni gathering in over two years.

Head of School Professor Colin Pulham opened the event with an update on recent developments at the School, including new programmes, spaces and partnerships. Dr Nicholle BellProfessor Jason Love and Dr Mathew Horrocks then gave talks as part of a research showcase, sharing insights into some of the fascinating work taking place within the School.

Following talks, student ambassadors Eleanor and Nicholas led tours of the NMR facilities and undergraduate teaching labs to give alumni a flavour of how courses and analytical techniques used by students have changed since their time at the School. Although some areas of the Joseph Black Building have been transformed beyond recognition over the years, many graduates were delighted to see familiar names of current staff on doors!

The event closed with a drinks reception in the social space. Alumni attendees enjoyed making new connections and finding themselves, former classmates and lecturers on the class photos displayed. Happy memories were shared, including recollections of favourite professors, studying abroad, and socialising at the many ChemSoc events over the years.

Great to hear about current research and also how teaching has evolved over the years and through COVID

It was nostalgic coming back to the department, but also great to see how it continues to thrive.

We were delighted to welcome graduates back after so long. The Joseph Black Building holds special memories for so many within our School of Chemistry community, and it was wonderful to celebrate these alongside the world-leading research and teaching which continues to thrive here in the School.
